Some Student Comments

"Luis De La Lama is quite simply a superb art teacher. I have studied under several notable art instructors in the last few years and Luis presents more information in a more understandable manner than any of the rest.

His class, "Painting the Figure in the Realist Tradition, Rediscovering Eternal Values", has been a rare treat in that unlike some teachers who give out just enough information to keep you coming back, Luis presents in this class a wealth of information that is limited only by each student's ability to absorb it. Along the way he introduces the student to some of the masterworks of classical art instruction which have been written over the years. The class is mainly practical, focusing on the materials and techniques necessary to perform each of the classical methods presented. The materials are presented in depth - the ground, paint, and brushes with information on supplemental materials added as needed. The palette used combines transparent and opaque paints and was formulated based on Luis' research and practice over the years. The techniques are presented with an overview of each method discussed initially and are then supplemented by Luis' individual instruction during the course of each class. This individual instruction is tailored to each individual and their unique skill level. His demonstrations both for the class as a whole as well as individually provide the student with a wonderful opportunity to watch a master artist at work. Due to the nature of the course, a fair representational drawing ability is necessary to take full advantage of the instruction provided, but no painting ability is required. Luis is a demanding teacher but always understanding and fair. I don't believe he ever criticized a work without finding something positive to say aswell. I should add that in aiding each student to achieve a cohesive layout for each picture, Luis also provides a remarkable mini-course in composition. Last but not least, Luis provides insights into the philosopy of classical painting - instructing students in the great ideas which provide the underpinnings of much of classical art and encouraging them to join in this great historical tradition.

On a personal note, I found that Luis conducts class in a very friendly manner and does not insist on distancing himself from his students which I found refreshing. If classical realism interests you, you won't find a better value than this class."

I have just finished posing for Luis de la Lama and his Painting for the Sublime: the Techniques of the Flemish School six-week course.

I've modeled now for more than 3 decades! The earlier years of my life were all portrait and runway, where as the last 6 years have been for Nude portrait & figure drawing, painting, sketching and sculpting classes.

Watching & observing - as well as listening to Luis was extremely educational for me and included all intermediate artists in attendance. I have never worked for such a phenomenal instructor!!

Luis is truly a very devoted instructor. He has an unusual flair for identifying to the needs of each of his students. In doing this, he has brought about a very noticeable improvement in each and every one of his students. The art they've produced speaks to the abilities of this wonderful instructor.

If you have the desire to learn about oil painting, then take this opportunity to sign up and take one of his six-week sessions. In the end, you'll truly be proud of yourself & what you've been able to accomplish.

"When I approached Luis about private portrait instruction I was looking for an intensive study that would fine tune my ability. With his keen eye, in-depth knowledge, and enjoyable personality, Luis proved to be the perfect choice. I gained confidence in my own judgement and a greater understanding of the things I see. The experience exceeded my expectations."

"This kind of course should be required of every art student before beginning to paint – whether in a formal curriculum such as college or an evening art school. It is that fundamental and presented well.(Incidentally, I never had it and I have an MFA)"

Gentle. Attentive, professional interaction with all student. For me, it filled in huge gaps missing from Art collegiate experience – in terms of techniques and correlation with art historical context. I loved this class and instruction.
